H.R. 1322 Gains Republican Cosponsor; Total Now at 27

H.R. 1322, the Emergency Retiree Health Benefits Protection Act, was introduced in the House in March and already has 27 cosponsors.  From the beginning, ProtectSeniors.Org has worked to make this a bi-partisan bill and we are proud to say that we have been able to do that with the recent support of Rep. Walter Jones of North Carolina.

A list of all the current cosponsors is available on our website by clicking HERE.  If your Representative is a cosponsor, we encourage you to send your thanks and reiterate what passage of this legislation will mean to you.  If your Representative is NOT on this list, please write to him or her and ask for their immediate support.  You may visit our Legislative Action Center to identify your Representative, find contact information and send a message using our electronic system.

Thank you for your continued efforts in support of H.R. 1322.

Layoffs stemming from CenturyTel Inc.’s $11.6 billion purchase of Embarq Corp. likely will be few this month, but they are expected to pick up through the end of the year.

The companies closed the stock-and-debt deal on Wednesday, forming CenturyLink Inc. (NYSE: CTL), which has roughly 20,000 total employees across 33 states. CenturyLink is based in Monroe, La.

Company spokeswoman Annmarie Sartor said Thursday that probably 30 or fewer jobs would be cut during July. The top tiers of leadership still are determining what functions overlap and where cuts should be made.

Please consider joining with ProtectSeniors.Org in supporting a bill in the US Congress (HR1322) as a two pronged effort to restore your stolen benefits.

  • 36.3 million -- The number of people 65 and over in the United States on July 1, 2004. our age group accounts for 12 percent of the total population. Between 2003 and 2004, 351,000 people moved into this age group

    • voting -- 65 percent -- Percentage of registered voters ages 65 to 74 who voted in the 2002 Congressional election. Seventy-two percent of people ages 65 to 74 voted in the 2000 presidential election. This age group had the highest rate of voter participation in both the 2000 and 2002 elections.

    • 17 percent -- Percentage of Florida's population that was 65 and over on July 1, 2004. Florida led all states in this category. West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Iowa followed closely, at 15 percent each.

    • Not only do we need to support the passing of HR 1322 but we need to let those who represent us know how we feel by our vote in 2008!

July 26, 2007

Today EMBARQ announced significant changes to three areas of our retiree benefits program

— medical coverage, life insurance and the matching gifts program.

Recent developments in the Medicare marketplace make it more practical and efficient for

Medicare-eligible individuals to purchase medical coverage directly through a national carrier

or one of the many companies who specialize in the Medicare market than for EMBARQ to

provide this coverage.
